Written by a trained cosmetic surgeon who possesses over 35 years of experience and has performed 5,000 cosmetic procedures, this reveals a full and accurate picture of the inner workings of a much-hyped field. This book also serves as an authoritative guide to choosing a top specialist, selecting the right procedure, and using a safe facility at an affordable price. Key information is featured on negotiating fees without compromising quality; tracking down “superspecialists” (surgeons who are properly trained and perform only cosmetic surgery); and ensuring the best results with the fewest complications. Thirteen of the most common cosmetic procedures to the body and face are described and profiled in terms of operating room times, recovery time, and how long the procedure is effective. Also included is a convenient, ready-to-copy 29-point checklist.

Kotler, a veteran practicing cosmetic surgeon, demystifies his specialty, ranging from the simple differentiation between plastic and cosmetic surgery to handy checklists of questions to ask before undergoing cosmetic surgical procedures. Other topics discussed include fees, aftercare, alternative techniques and products for aging skin, and annotated recommended readings. The most important guidance provided by Kotler is on finding the right surgeon, as the combination of an informed patient and a trusted surgeon offers the optimum conditions for a good outcome and a happy ending. This entertaining, credibly written book-which provides information that is also, in many cases, helpful in negotiating other areas of the medical/surgical world-would be a fine addition to any consumer health collection. With highly illustrative before-and-after pictures.-Joanne Rich, Health Sciences Libs., Univ. of Washington, Seattle
