Grades 3-6 This slim paperback packs in an amazing amount of information, delivered in the feverish tone of a soccer-obsessed superfan. Superlatives and exclamation points abound, and the excited chatter aligns perfectly with the graphic-novel-like panels, making this both a visual treat and an engaging read. Brief graphics-rich, breezy chapters provide significant background history about the game's beginnings as well as legendary players, teams, managers, and dynasties, plus famous rivalries, notorious upsets, memorable goals, and, of course, the World Cup. It's refreshing to see women's soccer included in the general narrative as well as in a separate chapter, ""Women Rule."" Other chapters celebrate professional players famous for their activism and charitable contributions, clubs that embrace various causes such as environmentalism or inclusion, and the sport's efforts to confront racism, misogyny, and homophobia. Statistics are current through December of 2022, and there's mention of the 2021 GOALS Act that ensures equitable pay. A good choice for reluctant readers, this eye-catching offering should delight soccer fans and incite interest from the uninitiated.
