Grades K-2 These eye-catching additions to the Colorful Minds series (6 new titles) serve as emotional self-help books for young audiences. The series is based on the premise that everyone has a rainbow of emotions, and on some days one color may shine the brightest. All the books follow a similar format. After a certain feeling is identified, the following pages break down reasons why a person might feel that way and offer age-appropriate activities for managing the emotion. The Gray Book instructs readers dealing with loneliness to close their eyes and remember all the loved ones to whom they are connected. Children will need to be introduced to the activities, but even young kids should be able to replicate them independently. Pages are filled with bright graphics and simple cartoon illustrations; bouncy little brains act as guides, and each book includes an index and glossary. Parents and educators will appreciate these accessible social-emotional learning aids.

Gr 1-3-Using a color spectrum, readers are introduced to the expression of and understanding of different emotions they experience. For fans of Inside Out, this color coating style will feel familiar with some additional feelings added into the mix. Notably, the feeling of loneliness and stress help to explain what is going on in the mind when one feels each. Each colorful element of the mind spectrum is treated equally to show that there is no shame in feeling any of them. VERDICT This sort of emotional intelligence makes these titles very useful for schools, especially for counselors and social workers, and likewise can be beneficial for home use by parents to similarly explore this sort of emotional understanding with children.
