A well-dressed corpse found shot in the sand and gravel wharf sparks trouble for Detective Chief Superintendent Colin Harpur and his unpredictable boss, Assistant Chief Constable Iles.

"A must-read for devotees of British procedurals" - Booklist Starred Review

The man is found dead in the local dockyard, shot from behind. Colin Harpur, examining the impeccably dressed corpse on his hands and knees, predicts the execution spells imminent trouble - and not just the unexpected arrival of his spiteful, brilliant boss, ACC Iles, at the two a.m. slaughter scene. Iles' progressive attitude towards the local drugs trade has kept gang warfare off the streets, but now it seems jealous outsiders may be coveting the safe, ordered community he has so brilliantly created. Coveting too, the local property - for instance, drug lord Ralph Ember's luxurious mansion, Low Pastures, home to his unparalleled collection of china and porcelain. Harpur and Iles are determined to protect their set-up at all costs - which includes protecting 'Panicking' Ralph. But Ralph has his own plans, and there are dark rumours about Iles on the wind . . . Blackly humorous, delightfully eccentric and packed with sharp-tongued wit, this gritty British police procedural is a must-read for fans of Bill James' critically-acclaimed long-running Harpur and Iles series.

Fans of James' quirky approach to the genre, along with his oddball characters and distinctive plots, will relish the latest Harpur and Iles episode. Assistant Chief Constable Des Iles and his partner, Colin Harpur, fear a double murder may be related to one of the duo's past cases in which one of Iles' team was killed. The suspected hit men were brought to trial but acquitted, only to later be murdered themselves, casting suspicion on Iles. Now a television special on the incident threatens to resurrect the questions about Iles' possible involvement. Not only is Iles feeling threatened, but so are the town's major drug dealers?Mansel Shale and Ralph Ember?who fear that if Iles, who has turned a blind eye to the dealers' operations so as to keep peace in the town, is jailed or removed from his job, their happy situation will end. What happens next is both horrifying and comical, but, in typical James style, the ending will be as much a surprise to readers as it is to the characters. A must-read for those who enjoy an element of dark humor in otherwise gritty crime fiction.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)

Des Iles and Colin Harpur return in another distinctive procedural from genre master James. Assistant Chief Constable Iles wants to become a chief constable, but that means moving to another city. He's particularly proud to have forged a kind of cease fire between two arch-rival drug lords, Ralph Ember and Mansel Shale, but he knows that his departure could disrupt that, possibly opening the door to gang warfare. In fact, rumors of Iles' possible relocation already seem to be setting off waves, most notably the murder of a man shot twice in the head in the city's wharf area. Harpur and Iles surmise this might well be the first "testing" incursion by a drug gang from outside the city. What happens next is told in James' trademark style, featuring barbed badinage between the bombastic Iles and the long-suffering but subtly disrespectful Harpur; vulgar, laugh-out-loud humor; wildly oddball characters; and bizarre plot turns that are as funny as they are tragic. This is one of the high points in James' long-running and critically acclaimed series set in a fictional town in the south of England. A must-read for devotees of British procedurals.
