Winner at the 2015 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards. What Are You Scared of, Little Mouse? is a tender tale that will help the youngest children overcome their fears.

"What are you scared of, Little Mouse?"

"I'm afraid of the dark, in case a monster comes and gets me."

"Look around you, Little Mouse. There aren't any monsters in your room. You're just imagining things."

Lately, Little Mouse is very scared. He feels frightened all the time, and is afraid of everything. Mommy Mouse is very worried. At night, Little Mouse cannot get a good night's sleep, paralyzed by the fear that a monster will appear and take him away. In summer, although the sun shines bright in the sky and the weather it is very hot, Little Mouse does not swim in the lake because the water and the bugs swimming around in it scare him. However, Mommy Mouse is always by his side, providing him with the understanding and security necessary to overcome all his fears.

PreS-A whimsical tale about a young rodent and all of the things he fears. Luckily for Little Mouse, Mommy Mouse is always there to calm his worries. One by one, she discusses each concern and encourages him to be brave. Some of the many things Little Mouse fears are bugs, owls, illness, and thunder and lightning. Hilb's beautiful illustrations are done in soft, muted colored pencil lines and express the emotion and anxiety Little Mouse is feeling, thus supporting the simple text. Mommy Mouse and Little Mouse are charming and endearing characters to whom preschoolers will relate. A perfect choice for one-on-one or bedtime reading. VERDICT A sweet story that young children will love, and a great tool for parents who are looking to help their children overcome their fears.-Megan McGinnis, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY
