Rev. Jen Miller (Elf Girl; Live Nude Elf) has put together a beginner's guide to BDSM by drawing upon her experience as a sex surrogate to a renowned therapist, working as a "sub" (someone who likes to play the submissive/masochist role, as opposed to a Dom, who plays a dominant/sadist role)and writer for Penthouse and Nerve.com. Introductory topics include safety, a glossary of terms, and ways to approach sexual interests with a partner. The book describes different types of BDSM play as well as the techniques, toys, and skills needed to participate in activities such as verbal and physical humiliation, spanking, flagellation, role-play, temperature play, and bondage. The author combines advice from Dom friends and stories from her own experience. VERDICT Playing off the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, Rev. Jen has compiled a simple and funny yet serious how-to for those interested in exploring BDSM outside of the topic's growing popularity in fiction.
