This specialty survey text compiles the major works of noted architect Ching into a brief overview of the issues and practices of architecture. This is an ambitious goal to achieve in under 432 pages, including glossary and index, especially since fully half are devoted to Ching's architectural drawings. The book is roughly organized into two sections: episteme (history, theory, design elements and processes) and techne (methods, materials, other technical aspects). Despite the difficult-to-read font (based on Ching's own hand lettering), this inexpensive and highly graphic volume is a good introduction to the discipline for both students and interested laypeople.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
