Fishing writer and engineering professor Schulz (The Habits of Trout, 2018) offers a good-natured, informative, and occasionally rambling account of many trout and grayling fishing destinations in Montana. A resident of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Schulz drove a Chevy Suburban loaded with fishing tackle and outdoor gear to Montana at the invitation of writer Bob DeMott, fishing almost every day and camping by rivers. In his angling travelogue, he balances reflections on family history, his childhood with a strong single mother, and life with his wife, Roxanne, with what happens each day. Schulz's clearly written descriptions of fishing tactics and outcomes alternate with discussions of other fishing writers, including Jerry Dennis, DeMott, Nick Lyons, and Jim Harrison. He connects life in the Midwest and the West with musings on Harrison, who also lived in both Michigan and Montana, and even particular fly patterns. Schulz's ability to describe each individual Montana river and then pull back to consider the landscape and society of an entire large state is especially noteworthy.
