When a football player from Riley Donovan's school falls to his death from the top of a recreation center, a hunch makes her wonder if he was pushed.

But who would do such a thing, and why? Riley's detective aunt tells Riley to leave it alone, but that's not in Riley's nature. When her friend Charlie is accused of the murder, Riley is determined to clear his name, even if it means confronting vicious junkyard dogs, forming an alliance with an old enemy, and putting her own life in danger.

Following Trial by Fire (2016), teen sleuth Riley Donovan has a murder mystery on her hands. After school one day, the screams of cheerleaders draw Riley to the body of a fellow student, Ethan Crawford, dead after falling off of the roof of the rec center. The police--including Riley's guardian, Aunt Ginny--are less than thrilled to see the young white gumshoe there, especially when she tells them of a figure she saw on the roof. That fact, along with other evidence, leads investigators to believe that the death wasn't strictly accidental. Riley's tied up in the investigation whether she likes it or not--in the weeks prior to his death, Ethan broke up with his girlfriend and sought out Riley's company; beyond that, Riley's friend (and possible eventual love interest) is keeping secrets. When Riley is assigned to assist the strict football coach (who has it out for Riley), she gains access to Ethan's teammates and promptly takes advantage of it to interview them and find places where the official story doesn't add up. The football aspect of the story is a bit weak--admittedly, Riley doesn't know much about it, but the vague details of the team and player positions may confuse readers who do. The mystery, however, has plenty of suspects (most lacking racial detail) and a final surprise alliance. Quick paced and entertaining. Grades 7-10 Riley Donovan is on the case when the most popular football player falls to his death and the police suspect foul play. When her friend Charlie is taken in for questioning, she must do everything in her power to prove his innocence. McClintock's latest YA novel is a solid mystery featuring a likable girl who has a Nancy Drewlike advantage of living with her aunt, a lead detective on the police squad. The one weakness with the plot is the focus on a photography contest Riley's friends are participating in, which relates to the name of the bookthe teens must take a picture from above. Readers will believe this is going to play a significant part in solving the mystery, but its potential just kind of fizzles out, leading to a slight letdown. Despite this, the characters and the explanation of who did it and why make this a solid entry in any library collection where mysteries are well received, and will prompt readers unfamiliar with Riley's first case to seek it out.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
