***** THE BOOK OF DUST, the long-awaited new novel from Philip Pullman set in the world of His Dark Materials and narrated by Michael Sheen, has been hailed by the New York Times as "a stunning achievement." Find it on audio from Listening Library. *****

An exciting tale set in the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials saga

Lyra's Oxford opens in the thrilling comfort and familiarity of Jordan College, where Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon sit on the sun-drenched roof looking out over all of Oxford. But their peace is shattered when a strange bird (a witch's daemon, on its own) tumbles out of the sky. It is Ragi, daemon of Yelena Pazhets, and he seeks a healing elixir from an infamous Oxford alchemist (and rumored man-slaughterer) to cure his witch of a strange new disease from the South. Lyra and Pan decide to help and guide him (witches are friends, of course) but the closer their winding walk leads them to the alchemist's house, the stronger Lyra's sense that she's walking into a deadly trap.

In "Lyra and the Birds," Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, are swept up in an adventure that takes them from the rooftops of Jordan College to the streets of Oxford. The short story is set sometime after the events of THE AMBER SPYGLASS. Jo Wyatt and Richard Pearce are back as Lyra and Pan, as is narrator Pullman, but otherwise the cast is comparatively small. The CD package includes a map of Lyra's Oxford, as well as "souvenirs" such as a postcard and cruise line brochure, items that, as Pullman's introduction says, "might be connected with the story, or they might not . . . It's not easy to tell." LYRA'S OXFORD is essential listening for His Dark Materials fans, but be warned--it will only leave you wanting more. Fans who can't get enough of Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy will embrace this small, gifty-looking cloth volume, which packages a short story about trilogy heroine Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon along with such ephemera as a beautifully engraved, fold-out map of the alternate-reality Oxford which Lyra inhabits, a postcard of Oxford sent by Mary Malone (inventor of the amber spyglass that was featured in the trilogy's final installment) and a brochure for a cruise aboard the S.S. Zenobia
. A foreword teasingly explains that these items "might be connected with the story, or they might not; they might be connected to stories that haven't appeared yet. It's not easy to tell." The story itself involves a witch's daemon who asks Lyra to guide it to the home of Oxford alchemist Sebastian Makepeace; as the narrative unfolds, Lyra learns that the task is not as straightforward as it appears, and that she herself may be in some danger. Readers can use the map to trace Lyra's path to Makepeace's establishment readily enough, and they might enjoy the "advertisements" and "publisher's notices" printed on the reverse side (one title is by perfidious Marisa Coulter). Making sense of the other materials poses more of a challenge, however. Could the empty bench featured in Malone's postcard be the site of Lyra and Will's farewell in the Amber Spyglass
? Does the voyage of the Zenobia
point to a future publication? Those who like their storytelling delivered conventionally may find the presentation precious or frustrating; but puzzle enthusiasts will enjoy poring over the clues. Ages 10-up.

The fall season has brought a bounty of anticipated audiobook sequels for fans. Philip Pullman has capped off the His Dark Materials trilogy with Lyra's Oxford, not so much a sequel as a companion to the three fantasy novels. This latest adventure-essentially a short story-takes place two years after the events that close The Amber Spyglass and contains numerous intricate tidbits that close listeners will find a delightful challenge. The author reads here, along with many returning members from the full cast that made Pullman's previous audiobooks memorable. The CD package contains a map of Oxford, something Pullman has said his fans have long requested.
